LO- Explore the format of the show and its appeals
To protect kids under 15 they filter the radio show until 9pm so no swearing but  9pm there isn a filter and swearing is then allowed. if there is swearing before 9pm (live performances)they pre warn (may contain)
To protect under 18 with sensitive content such as assault, rape, suicide they would say (for the next 4 mins) they give a specific time frame so people can turn it off and turn it back on after the time frame is up.

The benefits of broadcasting on two channels is because the band that is performing will be shared to a lot more people and theres a more chance they will have more fans so more people will pay to see them so therefore more money for the band.

Rickie Haywood-Williams is a British radio DJ, he went to university of Bedfordshire. He has 1 child called Lola Williams. he is 42 years old and born in Croydon.
Melvin Odoom is a British Radio DJ and TV presenter he is 42 years old and went to University of Bedfordshire with Rickie Haywood-Williams
Charley Hedges is a British DJ and broadcaster, she is 37 years old she has a daughter called Summer Rose.

The live lounge is an actual room in the Radio 1 Studios. The live lounge room is the room where most of their live performances are broadcasted others are broadcasted in London. Artists are filmed in an intimate radio studio. They normally preform one or two of their own songs then another song realised within the past last 6 to 9 months.

What is the appeal of the live lounge?
Personal Identity- The audience might relate to the music that is being played and like the music that is being played, the audience might haver a similar age to the presenter and audience.
Information-  gives out background information about the artist and maybe up coming shows the artist has maybe the audience would relate to the artist.
Entertainment- the artists are brought in for the entertainment for the audience so they can enjoy music.
Social  interaction-  people will discuss the music that they have heard and talk to their friends about what they have heard on the live lounge and share with their friends.

Live lounge appeal and format
LO- to explore the format of an exam question and how to respond
BBC radio 1s remit is to educate and entertain young listeners between ages 15 to 29.
educate with mental health and gives life hacks
live lounge (live music)
new artist/young artist UK
How does the live lounge appeal to the target audience and meet the BBC remit?
  • What could you include? who the audience are, how the live lounge meets the BBC remit.
  • Who are the audience? 15-29 year olds
  • how is the audience appealed to? young presenters, young language
  • what is the remit?
  • How is the remit met? they make sure that they entertain young listeners using young and new uk artists.
  • what evidence from the show could you use to support your answer?

  • Address the question
  • An example
  • Explain how this example targets the audience
  • Link back to the question

The BBC live lounge uses young and new artists to appeal to the target audience. An example of this is seen when a new artist who goes by 'SELF ESTEEM' was on the live lounge and preformed one of her own songs and then done a cover for Becky Hills song 'remember'. Whilst preforming the cover of Becky Hills song she changed the genre of music to acoustic to fit her music type. ways this appealed to the target audience (15-29) is the informal language that was using during the show, and how they talked about fashion and laughing about making outfits for festivals.  This ensures that the live lounge targets their young audience.

lo- To practice exam technique and develop knowledge of radio content.

THE EXAM
The music section of paper 2 has 5 questions.
Questions 1,2 and 3 could be on radio
question 1:
  • Franchies
  • ?
  • TV licence
Question 2:
  • One way that radio stations target their audiences is by using the radio 1 live lounge, they bring young and new artist but also mainstream artists in to perform live music that appeals to the target audience, ages 15-29. Stormzy was brought in, he played his own music which genre is grime which is targeted at younger generation
  • One way that music radio stations can meet the requirements of the public service broadcasting is by entertaining, informing and educating the public, the live music on radio one is there to entertain the public by providing excitement for the listeners, in every episode, there is live performances and interviews which also will help entertain the audience.
  • One way that radio audience are passive is through listening to radio 1, for example being in your car with the radio on. one way that radio audiences are active is by engaging with the presenters by entering competitions and through phone calls and talking about political and entertaining things for the passive audience to listen too.
Question 3
  •  One reason why BBC radio has to provide a wider range of content than commercial radio because Radio 1 has a remit that they have to follow unlike commercial radio, BBC radio 1 live lounge brings in young and emerging artists to help them become know by more people but also to entertain the target audience, BBC radio 1 live lounge also offers a range of new music but also a range of mainstream music, and example of mainstream music would be when the live lounge brought in Stormzy and most people enjoyed. An example of new emerging artist would be Holly Humberstone, Holly did not just perform music she also spoke about her life.

1.Identify the word that describes a large company which owns a set of companies that produce different media forms- Conglomerate- examples include the Warner Bros.

2. Baur media owns radio stations as well as magazines. identify the word that describes adding other areas of business in this way.- Diversification.

Explain one way that music radio stations target their audiences, use the radio 1 live lounge as an example in your answer.
One way that Radio stations target their audiences is by bringing in guests to their show who are well known this means that their audience will enjoy and listen to the show. An example of this, is stormzy. Stormzy was brought in by Radio 1 to preform his songs and entertain their target audience 15-29 year olds. a way that they done this was through the language that they were using with stormzy, they were using words such as "sick", this is slang that the younger audience uses making them want to listen.

Target Q3- make points about how the bbc radio provide wider content on their radio stations, give examples on radio 1 and why they have to do this linked to the remit.

BBC Radio provides a wider range of content than commercial radio for several reasons.
Firstly Radio 1 provides a wider rang of content than commercial radio do, an example of this is the live lounge, the live lounge is where they bring in new and younger artists to preform their music live.
This example is due to the remit and in particular the supporting new artists
We can identify this in the live lounge through

5. dancing
LO- to explore this section of the unit and research chosen case studies.

1.Avril Lavigne
2.Sk8er boi
3.The song combines of the genres, punk rock, pop punk, power pop and alt pop
4.September 2002
5.the story of the song is about her rocker boyfriend and a girl he knew in high school who rejected him because her friends didnt like him but she did. 5 years later shes watching tv whilst feeding her baby whilst shes alone and she sees the boy she rejected on the TV, she rung her friends and told them about it but they already knew what was going on and brought tickets to his show and she came along with them. turns out the song was about 'a girl he used to know' which is obviously about her. The song is in the singers POV and what she seen happen with them 2 and is now dating him.
6. The music video is Avril Lavigne and her band having a concert in the street and her dancing on the roof top of a car with the crowd dancing around them.
7.
1.Wheatus
2.Teenage Dirtbag
3. the genre is Pop rock
4. 20th June 2020
5. the song is about a nerdy boy who likes the popular boy and she asks him out on a date.
6. the music video is about the same thing but the only difference is the boy wakes up from a dream at the end.

Reasons why music videos are created or used;
To convey the meaning of the song
To promote the artists image, identity, talent or status
To showcase or promote the artists musical prowess for a specific audience.

the teenage dirtbag music video promoted the song and was included in a teenage based film. there was elements of cross promotion.

the sk8er boy music video was there to show that she wasn't just a one time hit and that shes here to stay and that it was actually her image not a 'fake' image. she sings and writers her own music and plays the guitar, she shows her identity and the music prowess that she has.

in sk8er boy the narrative shows some of the song like the concert at the end
in teenage dirtbag the narrative is of the full song is matches up fully apart from the end where the main  boy wakes up from a dream, that doesnt happen in the song.

sk8er boy

1. lip syncing
2. live performance
3. main focus on artist or band
4. performs to the cameras
5. has a story

Teenage dirtbag

The costume is showing wealth, theres gold chains, silk pyjamas and all the designer clothes is proving that he is wealthy. The setting of the music video is a hotel and the hotel looks like a 5 star luxurious hotel, there is a lot of gold detail within the setting and the colour theme is also showing wealth.

Taylor Swift
  • Gold tap
  • sat in  bath of diamonds
  • jewellery on her wrists and neck
  • money in the bath
  •  see thru bath
  • marble floor

in this image she looks like the stereotypical skater. The baggy clothes and the backwards cap is showing that she looks like the stereotypical skater. the makeup with the black liner is showing the typical "punk" look.

The cans of spray paint is showing us that they are going to vandalise something which is showing stereotypes of "punk" everything is blurred out apart from the bike and the cans because they want us to focus on the cans and bike, showing that they are punks/ rebels

She is always in front of everyone or by herself which is showing she has high status and is the main character. people are always cheering around her which also shows us that she is the main character and everyone loves her.

In teenage dirt bag the setting is in a school, we can tell this because of the lockers and the amount of people that are there, we can particularly tell that it is in an american high school because of the lockers and the students in normal clothes.

You can tell the guy in the front is the main member in the band because he is always in the front and is always the main one singing

Shot type, Angle and movement

Angles:
  • Dutch- A cinematic tactic achieved by tilting the camera off to the side

Movement:
  • Tracking- any shot in which the camera moves through the scene, often for an extended period.
  • Pan- camera stays still but moves left to right
  • Focus pull- camera doesn't move but focus changes

Teenage dirtbag- Naturalistic
Skater boy- Expressionistic

1.
2. POV, used to show she is the main character being recorded on her own, high status.
3. extreme long/wide shot, shows the full setting, on a school on a bench thats says "loser" all by himself, shows that he has no friends
4. high angle- used to show Avril Lavigne is the main star, everyone is around her cheering for her, used to show that she is is popular.
5. low angle, showing the boy at the front is the main person from that group and is in control all the time, looks like the stereotypical american high school bully. looks sort of intimidating.
6. Dutch angle, shows that the music video is expressionistic, angle is dutch which means that the camera angle is tilted to the side, and sort of hows how its all over the place.

Thursday 9th March
LO- To explore how sound and editing are used to create meaning in a music video.
Sound
diegetic and non diegetic
Diegetic- sounds that if you were inside the film, you would be able to hear
Non Diegetic- sounds that only the audience can hear, such as music in a film.

skater boy- Diegetic- The spray cans at the start and the helicopter at the end, it has been included to make her see more rebellious, makes the listener feel like they are there and as realism.
Teenage dirt bag- Diegetic- At the start when the car drives into the bike, this adds realism to the music video, and to add a dramatic affect to the music video.
Editing
  • Look out for transitions
  • Special effects
  • Pace and rhythm
  • Shot duration
  • Continuity
  • Order of shots/Shot choice
Linear:
Events are edited/Presented in chronological order and follows the narrative, Linear is more traditional/cinematic

Non-Linear:
Out-of-Order editing, no clear distinction of time and the events are cut up and rearranged, Non-Linear is more abstract and expressionistic.

Both skater boy and teenage dirt bag are Linear.

Pace

Skater boy- Pace of the music video matches the beat
the song is fast pace.

Teenage Dirtbag- slower than skater boy but not supper slow, Pace matches the cuts of each Scene, the shots are lasting longer because its a narrative.

1. Skater boy has a faster pace and more cuts than teenage dirtbag. I think this is the case because skater boy is a more upbeat song than teenage dirtbag, not only that teenage dirtbag is more of a story than Skater boy is there fore it needs to be slower to tell the story of the song.

2.Teenage dirtbag has longer shots than skater boy does, this is because, again teenage dirtbag is more of a story, so the longer shots help tell that story than having shorter shorts that change from scene to scene really fast

3. in Teenage dirtbag, there was a special effect used at the start of the music video to  change from when he was asleep on the stairs to the front of his high school to show his dream. this is used to show that you are going into his head to see his dream. at 37 seconds in you can see that the girl is walking in slow motion whilst the boy is looking at him, this is showing his desire for her.

Explain one way in which music videos use media language to differ from each other. Refer to one example of contrasting media language in two music videos you have studied to support your answer.

Music videos use media language such as editing to show how each music video is different. In skater boy, the pace of the music video and the pace of the shots changing is completely different from Teenage dirtbag. In skater boy, the pace of the music video is quite fast and the shots of the music video also change quite fast, matching the pace of the song this is because the genre of skater boy is punk rock and is traditionally a faster pace genre. However, in teenage dirtbag, the pace of the song is a lot slower than skater boy. The shots in teenage dirtbag change a lot slower than skater boy does but also matches the pace of the song. Teenage dirtbag uses the longer shots to show that its telling a stronger narrative so they have to focus on each shot rather than skater boy which is showing a narrative but the narrative isn't as strong as the narrative in Teenage Dirtbag.

To explore and practice exam style questions

Exam style, 4 mark question
Compare how gender representations are constructed in music videos, use two music videos that you have studied to support your answer. (4)

In the skater boy music video, Avril Lavigne is not represented as the stereotypical female, this is shown threw how she is dressed and how she acts, in the music video she is very rebellious, this is show by the illegal street gig that she has with her skater friends where she is jumping upon cars and singing to all her fans, another way that Avril Lavigne challenges the female representation is by the way she dresses, she is wearing baggy clothes throughout the music video which challenges the stereotypical female. On the other hand, in Teenage dirtbag the women are more sexually objectified, and is more of a  stereotypical female, this is shown by the clothes that she wears, she is always showing skin and has short skirts on which is more stereotypical for a women. The girl in teenage dirtbag is also seen as the "dream girl" and as the "prize".

Exam style, 10 mark question

Explain how stereotypes are used in music videos, refer to two music videos which you have studied to support your answer. (10)

In music videos, the producers use stereotypes because they are extremely easy for the audience to recognise and therefore identify characters.

In Ska8er Boi, they use the stereotype of rebellious teenagers. We see teenagers doing multiple rebellious things such as graffitiing walls, having an illegal street concert and abseiling the side of buildings. This shows a lack of respect for laws and fits the rebellious stereotype which is often associated with teenagers. Another example from Ska8er Boi is the stereotype of men, men in Ska8er Boi are seen as the stereotypical male. This is proven when we see all the men  riding bikes, skateboards and playing the drums. This is showing us what people often associate boys with.

In Teenage Dirtbag, they use the stereotypical social class of an american high school. This is proven to us when we see a group of jocks, the nerdy boy and the attractive pretty girl that the boys are obsessed with. This is showing us that that the average high school has these social classes which is easy for people to understand. In teenage dirtbag, they also challenge stereotypes, men are stereotypically attractive, strong and have a lot of friends but in Teenage Dirtbag, there is a boy that challenges these stereotypes because he is a "nerd" and doesn't have any friends. This shows us that stereotypes aren't true and not every man fits the typical male stereotypes.
