LO: to explore the use of Mise-En-Scene in films.
Mise-En-Scene
Mise-En-Scene: what is put into the scene.
Mise-En-Scene is made up of five areas
1. Settings and props
2. Costume, hair and makeup
3. Facial expressions and body language
4. Lighting and colour
5. Positioning of the characters/objects in the frame (blocking)
Setting and props
Settings and Locations play an important part in film making and are not just 'backgrounds'
Sets are either built from scratch or a great deal of time is spent to find in a setting which already exists.
Settings can manipulate an audience by building certain expectations and then taking a different turn.
Science fiction- computers, labs, weird alien things, space, high tech
A romantic comedy- beds, college, towns, Roses, rings, bedroom
A horror film- knifes, blood, old houses, dark and rainy locations, cars, basements, flickering lights.
Costume, Hair and Makeup
Costume hair and makeup act as an instant indicator about a characters personality, status and job.
It tells us wether the film is set in the past or present and what culture.
Certain costumes can signify certain individus.
1. cow boy, scruffy, set in 1980s,
2. snobby, set in the early 2000s, 'popular girl',
3. set in like 2010, Main character,
Facial expressions and Body Language.
Provide a clear indication of how someone is feeling.
If someone is smiling we assume they are happy.
body language and indicate how a character feels towards another character.
1. In trouble, not very happy, angry, fed up, annoyed,
2. thinks he hard, gang fight, could be looking at someone on the floor,
Lighting and Colour
To highlight important characters.
To make characters look mysterious by shading.
Low key lighting- produces sharp contrasts of light and dark areas, deep and distinct.
high key lighting- natural and realistic to our eyes.
1. low key lighting,
Positioning of characters
1. don't get one, angry with eachother, annoyed,
2. best friends, get on well and quite close,
Monday 14th February
The settings and props tell us that the film was set in the past, the painting on the wall looks quite old as well. they are using candles as light and that indicates "old".The costume hair and makeup tell us that the middle one is scruffy and the "guards" are smartly dressed and well kept. The characters facial expressions are telling us that they do not like eachother.
The setting would be a high tech room with lots of blues and whites. Props would be high tech equipment and tools. There would be science gowns and special effect makeup for the "alien" to make him look scary and real. people would be having tools in their hands and have shocked facial expressions of what they have seen. it would be a very light environment with bright lights. the characters would be sat around a "hospital bed" watching a robot take samples of skin and blood from the Alien they would have some very serious faces.
VIDEO CLIP
video game, moving, chain flushing, talking, glass and spoon, standing up, teeth brushing, breathing, draw opening, putting jam on toast, mirror squeaking.
TASK 2
Door opening and closing- door, footsteps- feet, dripping tap - pencil, someone else walking- feet, computer turning on computer, RUNNING!
